Melatonin is a hormone secreted by a small gland of the brain, the pineal gland (also called epiphysis). The secretion of melatonin is inhibited in the presence of light and stimulated when there is dark. Through melatonin, the pineal gland informs the brain about the relative duration of the hours of darkness and lighting over a period of 24 h (daily cycle), but also throughout the year (seasonality).  By secreting melatonin, the pineal gland "says" to the brain that it is dark and that this is the right time to sleep.
